Carpenters are highly skilled professionals responsible for the construction, installation, erection and renovation of wooden structures and frameworks. 1. Be physically fit

The first and ultimate step in becoming a carpenter is to be physically fit. Carpenters must have the physical strength to climb ladders, lift tools and heavy materials. Being physically fit is more than doing exercise, there are lot of things to do to be physically and mentally fit, they include

  • Eating good food.
  • Staying hydrated.
  • Getting enough rest.

2. Acquire some basic tools

Carpenters use a lot of tools, equipment and machineries to carry out their work efficiently. Get yourself some of these basic tools and master how they work and how to use them. Some of these tools are but not limited to measuring tools like tape measure, ruler, and striking tools like Hammer, and marking tools and cutting tools like chalk line, pencils, saw and saw blade.

3. Knowing the carpentry skill

There are lot of skills in carpentry which you need to know, develop and master. These skills will help you as you journey in becoming a carpenter. Some of skills are maths, mechanical, and computer skills. Basic math skills is required to measure and calculate the size of materials that will be required for a project.

4. Gain practical experience

Experience they say is the best teacher, gain experience under the supervision of experienced carpenters, this will help really you to become a good carpenter. You can gain experience by volunteering to assist in organizations that offers volunteering opportunities, there are lot of organizations that are ready to accept you even with no experience, find them, and this will really help you in boosting your practical experience.

Another way of gaining experience is to become an apprentice by enrolling for high school diploma in carpentry, it is usually a 3-4 years program in which you earn as you learn and get a certificate after the program, you will gain actual work experience. However, you have to meet some requirements before you can be accepted as an apprentice, some of the requirements include;

  • You must be at least 18 years.
  • Physically fit to handle hard work.
  • You must have a proof of residency.

5. Get a recognized qualifications

You need to complete your journey as a carpenter in Detroit. This qualification certifies that you have the appropriate training and knowledge to work.
